The chart your clients actually need to see

If you asked ten advisers what the retirement conversation is really about, none of them would say asset allocation. It's something much more human than that. Will I be alright? Have I got enough? Can I stop working? Will there be something left for the children?

The industry has poured a lot of energy into the technical side of that conversation. Portfolios have got smarter. Platforms have improved. Regulatory documentation has never been thicker. What has moved less is the way advisers can actually show clients the answer they came in for.

For most advisers, that answer takes the shape of a cashflow projection. It's the moment in the meeting where you turn the screen round and walk the client through what their retirement might look like. And part of the challenge is the chart itself. A single line on a projection looks confident and clean, but it hides all the uncertainty tucked underneath it. Clients pick up on that, even if they cannot articulate it. Confidence that is a little too neat starts to feel like a promise, and no adviser wants to be in the business of making promises about the next thirty years.

A projection that shows a variety of outcomes, built on evidence you can defend, changes the shape of the conversation. Your client sees a range rather than a number. They see the shape of their retirement, including the wobble in the middle and the tails at either end. And you have somewhere honest to go when the harder questions come, because you can point at what the modelling is telling you rather than reaching for reassurance.

Our Sustainable Income Tool was built with those client conversations in mind. It uses street-level longevity data covering 1 in 4 UK DB scheme members, which reflects most advised clients more accurately than a national average. It draws on portfolio-specific projections from our institutional modelling, so the picture your client sees is grounded in a proper evidence base. And the visuals are designed to help clients understand what they're looking at, not just to satisfy a file review.

What that gives you is a conversation that starts where your client actually started, and ends with an answer they can see for themselves. The rigour is all there. It just doesn't have to be the first thing on the page.
